The basics

What is business leasing?

Business leasing lets you drive a car or commercial vehicle for an agreed monthly payment. This means you don’t have to pay the full purchase price upfront.

With a financial lease, you finance the vehicle and work towards owning it outright. With an operational lease, you pay to use the vehicle and usually return it at the end of the agreement.

  • More flexibility for your business
Spread the cost of your vehicle, while allowing for any down payment and VAT payable upfront.

  • A clear view of your monthly costs
Know your monthly lease payment and which vehicle costs you’ll need to cover separately, making it easier to plan your budget.

Financial lease

Work towards full ownership

You finance the purchase and become the vehicle’s economic owner from day one. Once all instalments and any final balloon payment have been paid, you become the legal owner too.

  • Monthly payments cover interest and capital repayments

  • You arrange maintenance and insurance

  • Vehicle and loan recorded on your balance sheet

  • Interest and depreciation are generally tax-deductible

Operational lease

Less to manage

You pay to use the vehicle. With a full-service operational lease, maintenance, insurance, road tax and roadside assistance are usually included.

  • Many running costs covered by one monthly payment

  • The leasing company retains ownership

  • Agreed lease term and mileage allowance

  • No residual value risk when you return the vehicle

How much will your next car cost per month?

Your monthly financial lease payment depends on a few key factors. Adjust the figures to see how you can tailor the financing to your budget.

  1. Purchase price: The more you need to finance, the higher your monthly payment, assuming the other terms remain the same.

  2. Lease term: A longer repayment period usually means lower monthly payments but more interest paid overall.

  3. Down payment: An upfront payment or the trade-in value of your current vehicle reduces the amount you need to finance.

  4. Balloon payment: You pay this amount at the end of the agreement. It lowers your monthly payments, but interest is still charged on it throughout the term.

  5. Interest rate: The lender determines the final interest rate and terms based on your application.

Leasing for new businesses

As a new business owner or self-employed professional, you may need a vehicle for work. Financial lease may be available even if you don’t have several years of financial statements. The lender assesses your business, your ability to make the repayments and the vehicle you want to lease.

What might you need to provide?

  • Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK)

  • A valid form of ID

  • A business bank account

  • A VAT number, if applicable

  • Recent bank statements, tax returns or other financial information

NEED A CAR TEMPORARILY?

More flexibility with short-term leasing

A temporary project, a new employee or a changing workload? Short-term leasing could be the right solution. You choose a short lease term and, depending on the contract, can end the lease after an agreed minimum period.

This flexibility usually comes with a higher monthly payment than a comparable long-term lease. Before signing, check the minimum term, notice period, mileage allowance and included services. Eligibility criteria also apply to short-term leasing.

Frequently asked questions

Does my car go on my business balance with financial lease?
With financial lease, you are generally the car’s economic owner. If you classify the car as a business asset, both the car and the associated financing are recorded on your business balance sheet.
Are interest and depreciation tax-deductible?
If the car is recorded on your business balance sheet, interest and depreciation are generally deductible from your taxable profits. Private use may require a tax adjustment.
Can I deduct my full monthly financial lease payment?
No. Your monthly payment consists of interest and repayments of the amount borrowed. The interest is generally tax-deductible, but the repayments are not. The car’s purchase cost is accounted for through depreciation.
Are operational lease payments tax-deductible?
Yes, business lease payments are generally deductible from your taxable profits. If you also use the car privately, an adjustment may be required.
Can I reclaim VAT on my leased car?
Subject to certain conditions, you can reclaim VAT to the extent that you use the car for business activities subject to VAT. How this works depends on factors such as the lease type and how you use the car.
Do I have to pay VAT upfront with financial lease?
If you finance a car sold with VAT through financial lease, the VAT is generally charged on delivery. You will often need to pay this yourself upfront. If you are entitled to deduct VAT, you can claim the deductible amount through your VAT return.
Can I reclaim VAT on a car sold under the margin scheme?
Not on the purchase itself, as VAT is not shown separately on the purchase invoice. You may be able to reclaim VAT on maintenance and running costs, subject to certain conditions.
How does private use affect my VAT deduction?
If you have deducted VAT and also use the car privately, you must make an adjustment for private use in your VAT return. For VAT purposes, commuting also counts as private use.
Does a passenger car qualify for an investment allowance?
Not automatically. Ordinary passenger cars that are not intended for professional transport services are excluded from the small-scale investment allowance (KIA). Choosing financial lease does not change this. Separate conditions apply to specific environmental tax schemes.
Can I claim an investment allowance for a commercial vehicle?
You may qualify if both the vehicle and your investment meet the relevant requirements. Factors include the type of vehicle and your total investments during the financial year. Ask your accountant to check what you are entitled to before you invest.
